This technique is popular because it creates a complete three-card story without choosing a spread. It is best understood as a modern creative exercise, not a fixed traditional law.

How to do the card before and after exercise

  1. Choose the anchor card before shuffling.
  2. Name the question or theme.
  3. Shuffle and cut the deck.
  4. Find the anchor without changing the order.
  5. Place the card before, anchor and card after in a line.
  6. Read them as preparation, central energy and development.

If the anchor sits at an edge, you can treat the deck as circular or reshuffle once. Decide before looking at the neighboring card.

How to choose the anchor card

Choose a card that represents the subject, not the answer you hope to receive. The Lovers can hold a relationship choice. The Chariot can hold a question about movement or determination. Eight of Pentacles can anchor skill and work. The anchor does not need to be Major Arcana.

You can also choose a card that appeared repeatedly in recent readings. In that case, ask what prepares its theme and what grows from it. Keep the question open enough to notice a pattern, but focused enough to evaluate the result.

1. The Lovers

The card before The Lovers can show what prepares the bond or choice. The card after can show what the connection asks from you or where the current dynamic leads. Keep the reading connected with mutual behavior rather than using it to claim another person’s private thoughts.

The card before Death may show what has completed or what keeps the old form alive. The card after may show the first energy available beyond the ending. Death should not be used to predict physical death.

The card before The Sun can show what brings a truth into visibility. The card after may reveal how confidence, clarity or recognition can be used. The Sun is positive, but it still needs context and participation.

4. The Moon

The card before The Moon can show what created uncertainty, sensitivity or projection. The card after can reveal what helps you move through partial visibility. It does not automatically prove secrets or deception.

5. Wheel of Fortune

The card before the Wheel can show the pattern or condition reaching a turning point. The card after may show how the new circumstances begin to unfold.

6. The High Priestess

The card before the High Priestess may show what needs to become still before intuition is heard. The card after may show how inner knowledge becomes language, timing or action.

7. The Fool

The card before The Fool can show what you are leaving behind. The card after may reveal the first lesson, opportunity or responsibility on the new path.

A full example with The Lovers

Imagine finding Queen of Swords before The Lovers and Three of Pentacles after it. Queen of Swords prepares the connection through honesty, standards and direct language. The Lovers holds the central bond or choice. Three of Pentacles develops the energy through cooperation and the practical work of building something together.

The sequence does not promise a relationship. It says that clear standards prepare the choice, and any meaningful continuation requires mutual participation. If the visible relationship contains no cooperation, the final card may describe what is needed rather than what is guaranteed.

Journal the result as three lines

  1. Before: What condition brings me to this energy?
  2. Anchor: What central theme am I meeting?
  3. After: What develops if the current pattern continues?

Return to the notes after the situation changes. The follow-up helps you see whether the neighboring cards described events, internal shifts or the conditions required for movement.

What this exercise cannot prove

The neighboring cards do not establish another person’s thoughts, a secret event or a guaranteed future. They create a symbolic sequence around the chosen anchor. The value comes from the question, the pattern and the reflection it opens.
